What is a knee replacement?

A knee replacement is an operation where the surfaces at the end of the thigh bone and shiin bone are replaced with a metal implant with a plastic spacer inbetween.

What does knee replacement surgery involve?

A knee replacement is a major operation. It is generally performed under spinal anaesthetic or general anaesthetic. You would normally be in hospital for 2-3 days.

How long does it take to recover from a knee replacement?

A knee replacement is a major operation and initially your "new knee" can be very painful. Most people are in hospital for 2-3 days and then require crutches for 4-6 weeks. It can take up to between 6 months to a year to make a full recovery.
